The location for the Benin City Nigeria Temple is 16 Commercial Avenue, Benin City. Plans to build a new temple in Nigeria was announced on April 5, 2020, by Church President Russell M. Nelson. The two-story sacred structure of 30,000 square feet will be built on 2.17 acres and include a center spire. Patron housing, a distribution center, and a welcome center will also be constructed.

This will be Nigeria’s second temple, with another currently operating in Aba and a third announced in 2018 for Lagos. There are more than 190,000 Latter-day Saints in Nigeria who worship in approximately 725 congregations.

Detailed design plans for these temples are still being developed. Further information – including interior renderings – will be made public later. Groundbreaking dates have not been set yet.

Latter-day Saints consider temples to be the “house of the Lord” and the most sacred places of worship on the earth. Temples differ from the Church’s meetinghouses (chapels). All are welcome to attend Sunday worship services and other weekday activities at local meetinghouses. The primary purpose of temples, however, is for faithful members of the Church to participate in sacred ceremonies, such as marriages, which unite families forever, and proxy baptisms on behalf of deceased ancestors who did not have the opportunity while living.
