Editor, Salt Lake Tribune
Tribune coverage of the Scott settlement, while largely fair to both sides, omitted fundamental facts broadly reported in other news media.
Both Tribune articles note that the Scott family consulted with their bishop before taking Franklin Curtis into their home. However, your reports make no mention that the bishop advised the Scotts against that action nor that the abuse occurred only after the family made the unfortunate decision to put Mr. Curtis into the same bed with their eleven-year-old son.
In order for Tribune readers to fairly evaluate the Church’s position that it was not legally liable for the devastating abuse that Mr. Scott suffered, they should have been informed of these essential facts.
Sincerely,
