News for Temples in Brazil and Indonesia

Groundbreaking announced for João Pessoa Brazil Temple, rendering provided for Indonesia’s first house of the Lord

The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced the groundbreaking date for the João Pessoa Brazil Temple.

Groundbreaking services will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2026. Elder Joni L. Koch, Brazil Area President, will preside at the event.

As previously announced, the João Pessoa Brazil Temple will be constructed on a 3.9-acre site located at Rua Paulino Pinto and Avenida Ministro José Américo de Almeida in the Cabo Branco neighborhood.

Over 1.5 million members of the Church call Brazil home, meeting in more than 2,000 congregations. There are 11 operating temples in the country, with a total of 24 temples announced, under construction or in operation.

The João Pessoa Brazil temple was announced in October 2023. On that occasion, President Russell M. Nelson spoke about the blessings of worshiping in the House of the Lord.

“The temple is a place of revelation,” he said. “There you are shown how to progress toward a celestial life. There you are drawn closer to the Savior and given greater access to His power. There you are guided in solving the problems in your life, even your most perplexing problems.”

Jakarta Indonesia Temple

An exterior rendering of the Jakarta Indonesia Temple has been provided.

As previously announced, the Jakarta Temple will be built on nearly 1.5 acres located at Synthesis Square on Jalan Gatot, Subroto Kav. 64 No. 177A, Subdistrict of Menteng Dalam, District of Tebet, South Jakarta City, Jakarta Special Capital Region, Indonesia.

Plans call for a three-story temple of nearly 50,000 square feet, an ancillary building with arrival facilities, a meetinghouse and patron housing.

Indonesia is home to almost 8,000 Latter-day Saints, in about 25 congregations. This will be the country’s first house of the Lord.

“Jesus Christ is the reason we build temples. Each is His holy house,” President Nelson said following the announcement of the Jakarta Temple in April 2023.

Latter-day Saint temples differ from chapels and meetinghouses, where members gather for Sunday worship services. Temples are considered houses of the Lord where Christ’s teachings are reaffirmed through sacred ordinances that unite families for eternity. Inside, members learn more about the purpose of life and make covenants to serve Jesus Christ and others.
