This house of the Lord will be built on a 5.8-acre site located at Avenida Chamiza Lote 2 2015, Pelluco, Comuna de Puerto Montt. Plans call for a single-story temple of nearly 18,500 square feet.

Chile is home to more than 613,000 Latter-day Saints meeting in around 575 congregations. This will be the first temple in this region of the country.

There are three operating temples in Chile: the Antofagasta Chile Temple, Concepción Chile Temple and the Santiago Chile Temple. Construction began on the Santiago West Chile Temple in 2024, and the Puerto Montt Chile Temple and Viña del Mar Chile Temple have been announced.

President Russell M. Nelson announced the Puerto Montt Chile Temple in October 2024.

In the house of the Lord, we focus on Jesus Christ. We learn of Him. We make covenants to follow Him. We come to know Him. As we keep our temple covenants, we gain greater access to the Lord’s strengthening power,” he said then.

Latter-day Saints consider each temple a house of the Lord and the most sacred place of worship on earth. Temples differ from the Church’s meetinghouses (chapels). All are welcome to attend Sunday worship services and other weekday activities at local meetinghouses. The primary purpose of temples is for faithful members of the Church of Jesus Christ to participate in sacred ceremonies such as marriages, which unite families forever, and proxy baptisms on behalf of deceased ancestors who did not have the opportunity to be baptized while living.
